About 70 city centre bars, restaurants, nightclubs and music venues have been recognised for keeping revellers safe and happy during nights out.

They all gained Best Bar None accreditation, a national scheme supported by the Home Office that promotes the responsible and effective management and operation of licenced premises.

Of the 69 drinking establishments recognised in the initiative, 54 venues received the top-ranked gold status – an increase of six from last year.

They include Rock City, Das Kino, Grosvenor Casino, Pit and Pendulum, Lloyds No.1, Pryzm, Horn in Hand, Malt Cross, Reds True Barbecue and Hockley Arts Club.

Fourteen won a silver award, with one receiving bronze.

Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID), which aims to promote the city centre as a place to live, work, shop and visit, runs the scheme in Nottingham.

BID Director Andrew Crawford said: “It is great news that so many licensed premises in Nottingham city centre have been successful in their bid to secure the Best Bar None accreditation.

“This high number and the amount of gold status awards just highlights how Nottingham is a safe place to visit and that the scheme is helping to make the city even safer by improving business standards.

“We look forward to announcing the winning premises at the Best Bar None awards ceremony.”

In order to achieve Best Bar None status, venues have to demonstrate they have policies and procedures in place to prove they are safe, responsible and well operated, while also complying with relevant legislation.

They are then assessed on areas such as the prevention of crime and disorder, measures they take to promote responsible drinking, their standards of safety and customer care, how they prevent and deal with public nuisance issues, the measures they have in place to protect children from harm and their approach to community engagement, including membership of initiatives such as Pub Watch and charities.

Last year’s initiative introduced the gold, silver and bronze system for the first time, with venues receiving their rank of award depending on their overall score.

The highest-scoring premises will now go through to an independent judging round, which will be undertaken by industry experts.

Those with the highest scores will be announced as the top venue in six different categories – best bar, best pub, best cocktail bar, best club, best restaurant and best independent.

From the six category winners, the judges will also choose an overall Best Bar None winner.

The winners will be announced at a special circus-themed Best Bar None awards ceremony, taking place on Tuesday, September 12, at Pryzm nightclub, in Lower Parliament Street.

All the venues that have won an accreditation will receive a certificate and window sticker that they can display to show that they are a Best Bar None accredited venue.

The BID, which has run the scheme since 2010, says they will also enjoy increased footfall and turnover by creating a safer night time economy, lower premiums for insurance policies, and stronger relationships with the police and local authorities.
