Nottinghamshire's health commissioners hope to recruit 25 GPs from overseas after receiving a cash boost of £2m.

NHS England has granted the funding to the Mansfield and Ashfield, and Newark and Sherwood Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) in a bid to tackle a GP shortage in the area.

The scale of the shortage is not known but the CCGs hope to recruit 25 GPs to 41 practices in the Mansfield and Ashfield, and Newark and Sherwood areas.

The funding has been released as part of NHS England's International GP Recruitment Programme.

Under the scheme, NHS England wants to recruit 600 doctors in 2017/18 and more than 2,000 over the next three years.

Dave Ainsworth, director of primary care for the two CCGs, confirmed the shortage of GPs in mid-Nottinghamshire.

He said: "This extra funding will result in more GPs in the area and this is good news for local people and practices.

"We aim to use this money to recruit 25 new GPs to the 41 practices across Mansfield and Ashfield and Newark and Sherwood.

"The extra funds will support our practices to manage the increasing demand for services and high GP workload seen across the country."

Mr Ainsworth added hopes the funding and the subsequent recruitment of GPs will ease pressures on services.

He said: "While the evidence shows patients are generally very satisfied with the service they receive from their local GP practice, we know the wait for a routine appointment can sometimes be a source of frustration.

"The International GP Recruitment Programme should go some way towards easing the current pressures in local health provision and is to be welcomed."

Dr Anne-Marie Houlder, acting medical director of NHS England (North Midlands), explained how the scheme will work.

She said: "Most new GPs will continue to be trained in this country, and general practices will benefit from the 25 percent increase in medical school places over the coming years.

"But the NHS has a proud history of ethically employing international medical professionals, with one in five GPs currently coming from overseas.

"This scheme will deliver new recruits to help improve services for our patients and reduce some of the pressure on hard working GPs in the area."
