Derby Market Hall opens despite Storm Aileen safety fears

Derby's Market Hall reopened at 11.30am today despite an earlier closure in response to Storm Aileen safety fears.

Derby City Council worried that glass on the hall’s roof may come off during the predicted 75mph winds.

However, as the Met Office withdrew its yellow weather warning this morning, safety inspectors checked the popular shopping hall's roof this morning and declared it safe.

A Market Hall spokeswoman said the team were letting its traders know about the change in plans.

Around 40 traders have stalls and shops at the Market Hall.

She said: “An inspection of the roof took place this morning at 10am and they advised us that we can reopen.

“We are letting the traders know now and they have been given the option [to come in].

“We just wanted to open as quickly as we could.”
