Live: well-known M1 services closed due to gas leak

A well-known service station on the M1, which thousands of drivers visit every day, has closed due to a gas leak.

Highways England, which is responsible for the motorway, tweeted this morning to say the Leicester Forest East Welcome Break services on the M1 northbound is currently closed on both sides of the motorway.

A tweet which was published at 7.30am reads: "The Leicester Forest East @welcomebreak northbound services on the #M1 between J21 and J21A is CLOSED due to an incident."

It later said both sides of the services were closed. Leciestershire Fire and Rescue Service has said the problem is a gas leak.

It is currently not known when the services will be re-open.

Twitter user Keri Watkins responded to Highways England saying she saw several emergency vehicles at the scene.

She tweeted: "Just driven past, North slip road closed and huge amount of emergency vehicles heading South, I presume incident there."
