A national shoe chain says it has closed its store in Intu because the shopping centre did not match its “premium” brand.

Soletrader shut its shop on the second floor of Intu Derby – opposite JD Sports – last week.

A spokeswoman for the store said it closed because the “shopping experience in Derby no longer matches the Soletrader profile”.

She added: “Soletrader is a premium brand selling designer footwear that looks to trade in locations alongside similar brands.

“Soletrader continues to open new stores, with the latest having opened in Bristol in the week before Christmas.”

Sports brand Lacoste, which was located next door, also closed in the same week.

National chain Footlocker, which has a shop in St Peter’s Street in Derby city centre, will be moving into the empty units in spring this year. Clothing shop Infinities next door will also make way for its arrival.

A spokeswoman for the shopping centre said: “Intu Derby continues to be in strong demand from a wide variety of retailers as we attract high numbers of shoppers throughout the year.

“As with many centres, the normal lease expiry cycle gives us an opportunity to bring in new brands to the centre and gives existing retailers the opportunity to make sure their stores are fit for their needs.

“There’s a lot going on at Intu Derby. In addition to Footlocker, we have recently had new openings from retailers and operators including Timberland, Five Guys and The Real Buzz.

“Our plans mean that we have a number of other exciting new brands currently in negotiations to take their first stores and others are looking at their existing stores to make sure they are making the best of their presence in the centre.

“Intu Derby is the premier place to shop in the East Midlands and we are ensuring that we keep bringing the very best retailers into the area.”

However, shopper Tracey Bricknell said she visits other cities because there is a lack of choice in Intu Derby.

She said: “It feels like Intu do not want any shops in the centre because it is full of coffee shops and eateries.

“I go to other cities for shopping as we don’t have much choice here and I feel sorry for the businesses that are trying to survive here - especially the independent traders.

“We need a good variety of shops and eateries to bring people to the city.”
