A 20-year-old from Derby has appeared in court charged with stabbing a man on a city park.

Kevin Mbuti pleaded not guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm when he appeared at Derby Crown Court, sitting at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that he carried out the offence on the Racecourse, off Berwick Avenue, Chaddesden, on November 14.

The hearing was told how Mbuti of Coniston Crescent, Breadsall Hilltop, has no previous convictions and a provisional trial date was set to begin the week commencing July 23.

Recorder Collingwood Thompson QC adjourned the case until then.

Part of the Racecourse was cordoned off.

He handed Mbuti conditional bail that he is curfewed to his home address between 6pm and 6am each day and that he does not contact the alleged victim in the case.

At the time of the alleged offence Derbyshire police said a man sustained “life-threatening injuries”.

A spokesman said: “Officers were called at 11pm to reports of an assault in the area.

“When officers arrived a man was found with life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre.

“It is thought that the man’s attacker was known to him.”

Anyone with information that would help the investigation is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Vanessa Burns on 101 quoting reference number 17000495844.
