Transfer targets, investment talks, EFL charge - your Derby County questions answered

This post first appeared on Derby Telegraph. Read the original article.

Plenty of topics were discussed in our latest Derby County Q&A.

Chief football writer Steve Nicholson was on hand to answer fans' questions.

James Parratt asks: How many caps will Sibley get for England?

Steve Nicholson: Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, James! Louie Sibley is an exciting player of huge potential, and hopefully he will fulfil that potential and progress to the highest level. For now, let him develop and progress. The spotlight is sure to be on him even more following his hat trick against Millwall and handling that is all part of a young player's development.

Adam asks: Is investment on the cards still?

SN: I have been keeping tabs on this and although some fans might say 'we've heard it all before and nothing seems to be happening', I can assure you that negotiations/talks etc are still ongoing and progressing. It has taken longer than many expected, but these things do and the process has not been helped by the uncertainty surrounding many things due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lewis asks: Whats the latest on Morgan Fox to Derby?

Derby County F.C Brasil ask: Morgan Fox can arrive for the next season?

SN: Derby were linked with Morgan Fox ahead of the January transfer window and they are being heavily linked with him again, but that is as far as it goes at this stage. I am sure Derby, and other clubs, are fully aware that the player is out of contract this summer but I'm told that Sheffield Wednesday are very keen to keep hold of him. Derby currently have three left backs in the first-team squad in Craig Forsyth, who recently signed a new two-year deal, Max Lowe and Scott Malone. At least one would have to be moved out if Derby are to bring in another left back.

Brian Miller asks: Are Derby going to let Chris Martin leave? Or are there serious negotiations ongoing?

SN: Talks are taking place, but any new deal would have to suit the club and the player. Chris Martin is believed to be one of the high earners and any contract offer from the club is likely to be on much-reduced terms and heavy on incentives.

Ian Birley asks: What's the Chris Martin situation?

SN: The striker rejected the club's first offer of a new deal, it was reported last week. His current deal is due to expire on June 30 and the first stage is to agree a contract for the remainder of this season. I understand Chris is keen to stay, and Derby would like him to stay but as with all contracts it has to be right financially for both parties.

Mark Tabberer asks: Let Man City keep Scott Carson? Yes or no?

SN: Scott Carson would be my number one keeper at Derby, Mark, but he is currently out on loan at Manchester City. He has a year left on his Derby contract and this might come down to finances. If Derby aim to reduce the wage bill and City are keen to keep him, as is being reported, then I can see him remaining at City. I would have him in my Derby team.

James Martin asks: What's the latest with the EFL charge? If we make the play-offs could they deduct points post season?

SN: Derby County are still waiting for a date for their hearing to answer the EFL charge hanging over them. It has been reported today that Sheffield Wednesday's case will be heard this week. Until we know when Derby's hearing will take place it is impossible to say when any punishment, if they lost the case, would come in. Derby have said the charge is "unlawful" and will be "vigorously contested".

Steve Dolman asks: Has Ben Hamer done much wrong? Might he be an option, either on loan again or for a small fee, for next year? 300 senior appearances tell a story.

SN: Ben Hamer, who is on loan from Huddersfield Town, has been steady since he replaced Kelle Roos in the team. Has he done enough to earn a permanent move, not for me. Don't get me wrong, he hasn't done a lot wrong but I don't think there is much to choose between him and Roos, generally. Yes, Roos struggled earlier this season but we must not let one mistake in the play-off final overlook his form when he broke into the team last season. The keeper situation needs looking at in the summer and it would not be a surprise if Derby brought in another keeper, and I wouldn’t argue with that.

Jamie Rowland asks: Views on the 5 subs allowed?

SN: I understand why they have brought it in, Jamie, given the special circumstances surrounding completing this season, but I don't like it. Added to the drinks breaks, and I understand why they have been brought in, there are too many stoppages.

Wils asks: What areas would you look to strengthen in the summer?

SN: The keeper department needs to be addressed because current number one, Ben Hamer, is on loan. Kelle Roos struggled earlier this season and Scott Carson is on loan at Manchester City. So there is a bit to sort out there.

A right-sided attacker/winger has been on the club's wanted list since Harry Wilson returned to Liverpool, and it is an area of the team that can be strengthened.

I would also look at the striking department because there is uncertainty over Chris Martin's future at the club while Jack Marriott has struggled this season.

Centre-back is another department I would look at given that Matt Clarke is on loan from Brighton.

Lee Porter asks: Do you think Fozzie's (Craig Forsyth) continued selection is stifling Max Lowe's progression?

SN: Not really, Lee. Craig Forsyth is in the team on merit, for me. Yes, he got caught out for Millwall's goal on Saturday but he also played his part in a good win. It is all about competition, and it is down to Max Lowe and Scott Malone to force their way in front of Forsyth. In his seven league starts since the turn of the year, Forsyth has been in a side that has won five and drawn two.
