Derby County will be without key defender Andre Wisdom for tomorrow night's Championship clash against Preston North End at Deepdale and he is also likely to miss Saturday's meeting with rivals Nottingham Forest.
The 27-year-old is recovering in hospital after being stabbed in an "unprovoked assault and robbery" in a street in Liverpool.
He is in a stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. He could be released from hospital in two or three days.
It is not clear yet how many of Derby's remaining seven league fixtures Wisdom will miss as the team pushes for a place in the play-offs.
The club issued the following statement: "Derby County Football Club can confirm that Andre Wisdom has been the victim of an unprovoked assault and robbery.
"He sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital, where he is in a stable condition.
"Merseyside police are investigating and the club will focus its efforts on supporting Andre and his family. Therefore we will not be making any further comment at this time."
The incident is believed to have happened in Toxteth, Merseyside, as the 27-year-old got out of his car to visit a relative, The Sun has reported.
The report adds that the attack came hours after Wisdom had helped Derby beat Reading in a Championship clash at Pride Park Stadium on Saturday.
