A huge diversion route has been drawn up drivers affected by the closure of a road which is just one mile long.

Melton Road/Loughborough Road, in Burton on the Wolds near Loughborough, is due to be closed later this year for a maximum of 10 days for roadworks.

Due to the 'carriageway patching works', which start on November 2, the county council has released details on the planned diversion route.

This diversion would see drivers wanting to travel down the mile-long road having to use a 14-mile long alternative route through neighbouring Wymeswold and past the A46 and back.

A spokesman for the council council said: "The purpose of the Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) is to allow Leicestershire County Council safely undertake carriageway patching works."

For drivers approaching Burton on the Wolds from the east, the diversion route will take drivers the opposite way down Melton Road towards Six Hills, and onto Six Hills Lane.

Drivers will then have to turn left onto Paddys Lane and then Wide Lane, then East Road to Wymeswold, which becomes Wymeswold Road to Rempstone.

Motorists will then turn left at Rempstone onto Loughborough Road to Hoton and Cotes, before turning left onto Barrow Road/Loughborough Road.

Finally drivers will turn right onto Prestwold Lane, which will take them to the other end of the closed road.

The same diversion route also applies for the other direction.

The road is to be closed from 9am until 3pm each day while the works are taking place.

The council say details of the work will be confirmed two weeks before they are due to begin.
