More than 70 new coronavirus cases confirmed today - here's where

More than 70 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed across the city and county in the last 24 hours.

The biggest increase was in Leicester - 34 - but Blaby, an area of concern for local public health bosses also saw a double-figure rise of 18.

Charnwood added eight cases to its total and Hinckley and Bosworth saw six new cases recorded.

Both Melton and Oadby and Wigston saw their cumulative tolls increase by two.

Harborough added one new case, while North West Leicestershire was the only area where no new cases were recorded.

The figures updated at 4pm on Wednesday, September 9, are:

  • Leicester – 5,953 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 1,680
  • Blaby – 630 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 620
  • Charnwood - 958 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 515
  • Harborough – 453 total cases -. Rate per 100,000 population: 482
  • Hinckley and Bosworth – 615 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 543
  • Melton – 237 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 462
  • North West Leicestershire – 366 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 353
  • Oadby and Wigston – 578 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 1,013

Around a dozen schools in the city and county have now reported single cases of the virus among staff or pupils.

As a result, hundreds of school children are self-isolating.

Public health officials and education bosses in the city and county have said that the number of confirmed cases in schools remains small given that tens of thousands of children and staff who have now returned to classes for the autumn term.

Meanwhile, people continue to report problems with the testing system with some struggling to make appointments.

Others are being offered a slot to be swabbed at centres miles away from their home address.

The figures updated at 4pm on Tuesday, September 8, were:

  • Leicester – 5,919 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 1,671
  • Blaby – 612 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 602
  • Charnwood - 945 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 508
  • Harborough – 452 total cases -. Rate per 100,000 population: 481
  • Hinckley and Bosworth – 609 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 538
  • Melton – 235 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 458
  • North West Leicestershire – 366 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 353
  • Oadby and Wigston – 576 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 1,010
