Fewer than 60 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed across the city and county today.

Leicester saw its cumulative toll near the 6,000 cases milestone as it increased by 37 to 5,990.

Broken down to district and borough area, numbers in the county appear to be lower than yesterday.

Blaby added five cases to its overall toll as did Charnwood and Oadby and Wigston.

Two new cases were confirmed in North West Leicestershire while Harborough, Melton and Hinckley and Bosworth all added one case to their totals.

The number of new cases being recorded nationwide continues to hover near to 3,000 a day.

The city mayor today called for Leicester to be brought into line with the rest of the nation when the Government reviews the local lockdown.

Sir Peter Soulsby said: “Our figures are now not alarmingly high in comparison to some other places in the country and making the case for keeping a set of Leicester restrictions that are different to elsewhere is increasingly difficult.

“It is confusing and it is frustrating.

“I believe the Government should tidy up the whole thing and bring us in line with the rest of the country.

“It would be so much simpler if that were the case.”

A decision on what happens next with the local lockdown is due tomorrow.

Meanwhile, more local schools have announced that staff and pupils have been asked to self-isolate as more cases have been confirmed.

Most have sent home years groups or classes that were in bubbles and remained open to other pupils.
