A huge fire which triggered an explosion at a council recycling plant last year appears to have been arson attack, it has emerged.
The blaze sent a huge column of acrid smoke into the air above Whetstone Recycling and Household Waste Site, while the blast lit up the night sky.
Now it has been revealed that the fire was apparently started by a group of men who had broken into the Enderby Road compound, poured petrol on to the ground in an area where combustible materials were stored and ignited it, a court heard this week.
Dozens of startled members of the public dialled 999 and were told to keep their windows and doors shut
