A student at a Nottingham university has spoken of overcoming a head injury when he was 12 that meant he had to have a ceramic plate placed on his skull.
Haydn Jakes, 24, was lucky enough to be told by doctors that a beanie hat he was wearing probably saved his life by absorbing some of the impact after the accident which occurred while playing on a building site with friends.
The incident left Haydn - who is an RAF cadet and an undergraduate aerospace engineering student at the University of Nottingham - with no last lasting side effects or brain damage, something he said he is "thankful" is the case.
