A site manager who is overseeing the construction of new homes in Branston, near Burton on Trent, has been recognised for his exceptional on-site management by the National House Building Council (NHBC).
Leigh Larkins, 47, who works for Bellway’s West Midlands division, is one of just 14 site managers in the NHBC’s West region to achieve a Seal of Excellence in this year’s Pride in the Job Awards.
Leigh is a site manager at Bellway’s Evelyn Gardens – a development of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes off Main Street in Branston.
The winning site managers were announced on Friday 23 October at the NHBC’s West regional awards ceremony, which was streamed virtually due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The Seal of Excellence Award is given to select finalists who achieved a Pride in the Job Quality Award in June. The award recognises site managers who provide new homes of outstanding quality and is considered to be among the most prestigious accolades within the housebuilding industry.
Leigh has achieved his first NHBC Pride in the Job award this year, which led on to him securing the prestigious Seal of Excellence. Both awards were earned for his work at Evelyn Gardens.
Leigh said: “This year was the first time I had been put forward for a Quality Award, and to come out winning the Seal of Excellence is a huge achievement.
“The team at Bellway West Midlands and I watched the live awards ceremony from our divisional office in Tamworth this year, and it was such a great feeling when my name was called – we all celebrated.
“The site staff at Evelyn Gardens have massively played a part in my award win. We all work very hard to give our customers a great after-service, and we have great friendships and communication with each other. As a team, we maintain a very well-looked-after site and we always put our customers first.
“Since the start of the pandemic we have created a very effective and safe system on site. We are now operating with one person per plot and a one-way system, and we have also applied sanitising measures, screens, staggered lunch breaks and much more to ensure safety.
“For young people looking to work their way up in the industry, I would always suggest it’s best to always be yourself and just go for it if you’re passionate about your work.
“Honesty is the most important trait a site manager can have, but successful site managers also need a hardworking ethic and good customer relations skills.”
Richard Holland, Construction Director for Bellway West Midlands, said: “This award recognises the exceptionally high standard of build and service at Evelyn Gardens.
“I am very proud of Leigh and his team for their dedication and hard work at the site during these unprecedented times, as it just shows how the team can work through anything together at Bellway.”
There’s currently a selection of two, three and four-bedroom homes available to reserve at Evelyn Gardens. A range of one-bedroom maisonettes will also be available soon. For more information, call 01283 893629 or visit bellway.co.uk.
