Milton Keynes housebuilder Barratt and David Wilson Homes has donated a range of hedgehog homes for Hedgehog Awareness Week (2nd – 8th May) to a support a rescue plan near to its Fairfields development in the local area.
The donation is in partnership with Great Linford Parish Council, which is encouraging everyone in the area to search for hedgehog nests and relocate and rehome them nearby.
The Hedgehog Rescue Plan began as Milton Keynes Council is reducing bushes that potentially have hedgehogs hibernating in.
After seeing the project, the housebuilder has donated a number of hedgehog homes so any hogs that are found have a safe haven to go to and can be safely rehomed. The donation comes as part of the leading housebuilders commitment to making wildlife friendly developments along with its national partnership with the RSPB.
Ruth Panther, Community Liaison at Great Linford Parish Council, said: “When we heard about the extent of the work being done across Milton Keynes and the implications to hibernating hedgehogs, we knew our residents would want to get involved in the attempt to save wildlife. I stress that we had guidance from The Hedgehog Society on the best way to go about the rescue. The public response to our request for help has been amazing and the donation of hedgehog houses has ensured that the hogs have a safe haven to use should their habitat lie in the path of the machines.”
As of July 2020, the British hedgehog has been officially classified as vulnerable to extinction, meaning it is more important than ever to protect our prickly neighbours.1
