Backing received for Birmingham aparthotel

Plans to transform vacant offices above the 02 Academy in Birmingham into an aparthotel have received the thumbs up.

St James' House in Horse Fair has been earmarked for the scheme which would see an additional four-storeys created.

Prosperity Capital sought the go-ahead from Birmingham City Council for the proposals which include 156 aparthotel rooms.

The proposal will create an estimated 40 jobs for onsite staff once operational.

The building is currently eight storeys high while the offices have been vacant since 2003.

A document submitted on behalf of the applicant with the council – whose planning committee met on 27 May – said: "The loss of office has been accepted through previous change of use consents and this proposal
