The official opening of Newark College’s new plumbing training and gas assessment centre is being celebrated by the quantity surveying team at Banks Long & Co, who have overseen the enterprise from its outset.
Their role in ensuring the development was delivered on budget resulted in it being one of the first of the new Towns Fund initiatives in Newark to reach completion.
Based on the College’s Friary Road campus, the centre has been transformed from unused garage buildings to a modern, state-of-the-art facility in just 6 months.
When plumbing and gas assessment courses begin in September, students will be able to take advantage of high specification workshops designed with input and advice from local businesses.
Collaborative partnerships with carefully chosen local industry experts, from architects to electrical engineers, were also crucial to the successful fast turnaround of the project.

Director of Banks Long & Co, Daniel Garfoot, thanked Lincoln College Group for appointing Banks Long & Co as the quantity surveyors for the project and praised all of those involved in steering the work to its successful conclusion.
He says, “Work began on the development in January this year, and we’re delighted that just 6 months later, the formal opening has taken place, and it’s ready to welcome students. The continual commitment to the project shown by my team here at Banks Long & Co, and by our exceptionally skilled partners, has created a valuable resource for the town which will train local people to a high standard in a sector where there are skills shortages.”
Banks Long & Co assisted the College in appointing Horsman Construction as their main contractor, along with Stem Architects, structural engineering firm Curtins, and electrical engineers Tynan Design.
Banks Long & Co are working on several other developments in the town, including IASTI (Newark)® - an International Air Space and Training Institute which will work with military and civil aviation professionals to train a new generation of pilots, engineers and ground staff.
Daniel continues, “Initiatives such as the Towns Fund are creating lots of new opportunities for growth and regeneration in small and medium-sized towns like Newark. It’s vital that people living outside major cities have access to good quality education and training because this will only attract more investment in the area further down the line”.
