NOTTINGHAMSHIRE DEVELOPER ENCOURAGES CHILDREN TO DIG IN TO GARDENING WEEK

A Bingham nursery got stuck into National Children’s Gardening Week (29th May – 6th June) after a green fingered donation from David Wilson Homes.

Serendipitys Day Nursery, close to the developer’s Romans’ Quarter community, received a variety of sunflower seeds and gardening equipment to help them learn more about planting.

National Children’s Gardening Week is an annual festival that’s celebrated in homes, schools, and community groups across the country, and supports the Greenfingers charity which is dedicated to providing magical gardens for children in hospices suffering from life limiting illnesses.

Michelle Breedon, Senior Manager at Serendipitys Day Nursery Bingham, said: “We are exceedingly excited to begin gardening with preschool room! With the resources and gardening tools provided, we’re eager to develop the children’s understanding by elaborating on how we can care for the environment, giving them responsibilities in growing their own flowers and then extending this into planting root vegetables.”

As noted by House and Garden, one of the gardening related trends is the growing popularity of micro-gardens which involves people creating their own personal gardens in the tiniest of spaces, from balconies and side returns to windowsills.

The demand for gardening had grown rapidly during the UK’s first lockdown as 322 million more plants had been bought in 2020 compared with 2019, according to Gardens Illustrated.

Rachael Harrison, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “We hope our donation to Serendipitys Day Nursery helped the children have fun planting as they learned more about looking after flowers.

“Growing their own sunflowers will be a fantastic team experience for the children and we can’t wait to see how they progress over the coming weeks.”

Romans’ Quarter is a growing community located on Dunsmore Avenue which has a selection of three, four and five bedroom homes available.
