Bird feeder donation goes down a tweet with pupils at Leicestershire school

Pupils at a primary school in Melton Mowbray are furthering their efforts to observe and help local birds, thanks to a donation from a local housing developer.

Leading housebuilder Barratt Homes – which is building a range of properties at King’s Meadow in the town – has donated a set of bird feeders and bird seed to Swallowdale Primary School, to enable schoolchildren to continue their birdwatching efforts as the weather gets warmer.

The RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch, which took place throughout January and February, enabled schools to take part in a countrywide project to monitor birds in their local areas.

Swallowdale Primary School took part in the event, which helped to educate children about local birds and inspire pupils to celebrate the species that regularly flock to their gardens.

Samantha Harries, Headteacher at Swallowdale Primary School, said: “We are very grateful to have received this kind donation of bird feeders and seed.

“We are lucky to have extensive grounds at Swallowdale Primary and being situated in a rural town, it is very important that we provide our children with opportunity to learn about the natural world. Having the new equipment will hopefully encourage more birds into our school environment.”

Jan Ruston, Sales Director at Barratt Homes North Midlands said: “To thank Swallowdale Primary School pupils for their impeccable efforts during the Big Schools’ Birdwatch, we wanted to pass on feeding facilities to help attract more birds to their school’s grounds.

“As part of our outreach to the local community, we are donating bird feeders to schools close to our developments with the aim to ensure our garden birds continue to thrive.

“We hope our donation will benefit the school’s birdwatchers and provide a more eco-friendly environment, providing birds with greater access to vital resources.”
