Local hospice urges Newark residents to ‘get talking’ about death and grief

Beaumond House is hosting a coffee morning to promote Dying Matters Awareness Week

Local charity, Beaumond House Hospice Care, is encouraging people to speak more openly about death and dying by hosting a free coffee morning in Newark town centre.

Taking place on 9th May between 11:30am and 1:30pm at the charity’s retail store on Beaumond Cross, Robins Hood Walk, the event will offer free refreshments whilst people speak honestly about death, dying and grief.

Beaumond House care staff will be on hand to provide expert advice on how to approach difficult conversations with friends and family, as well as answer questions about the hospice’s care services and how to access them.

The hospice - which provides free palliative care for people in Newark and Sherwood - has organised the event to mark Hospice UK’s national campaign, Dying Matters Awareness Week, which is taking place between 6th and 12th May.

The campaign aims to tackle the stigma of talking about death by inspiring people to have honest discussions about dying and grief, as well as to think about the language they use when doing so.

Louise Sinclair, Chief Executive at Beaumond House Hospice Care, said:

“We all know that one day we are going to die - and this is a scary thought - but talking about and sharing what your end-of-life wishes are means they are more likely to be fulfilled.

“We’re supporting Hospice UK’s Dying Matters campaign by encouraging people to talk about their future care and wishes at our regular coffee mornings. We know that this can be difficult, but a good place to start is to ask yourself ‘What’s important to me?’ and your discussions and plans can flow from there.

“This is an open event for all who would like to attend and there is no need to book a space. We look forward to welcoming everyone and sparking some important, honest conversations about death and dying.”
