New mural brings community feel to NTU in Mansfield
Visitors to NTU in Mansfield will be welcomed with a new mural design, following work commissioned by the university’s extra-curricular and public arts programme.
The mural, located in the University Centre, was designed by recent Graphic Design graduate Maisie Froud, following a competition between final-year students. This project, forming part of a larger initiative to enhance blank spaces across the NTU estate, was orchestrated by NTU Arts, in collaboration with colleagues from Estates and academics from BA Hons Graphic Design and Illustration courses within the Nottingham School of Art & Design.
Based around the theme of ‘community and connection,’ the mural incorporates content synonymous with Mansfield and the surrounding areas. Located on the ground floor, the mural is prominently placed to be seen by all visitors to the building.
Commenting on her design, Maisie said, “Before designing the mural, I researched the campus and Mansfield area. I decided to include the Mansfield council building as a focal point on one of the walls, to represent the local community. I also added oak leaves which are a reference to Sherwood Forest nearby.
“Moreover, I used the NTU pink throughout the mural and linked some of the people to the courses offered at the campus. For example, the people playing football represent the Sports Science qualification, while the policeman represents the Criminal Justice qualification. The vibrant colours and delicate shapes are designed to add positivity to the entrance of the building, while the carefully crafted composition creates a warming atmosphere as you walk in.”
Anne Adams, Culture Officer, NTU, was delighted with the completed mural, noting, “Our mural project provides opportunities for our final-year students to showcase their skills and get creative within a real-life project on the University’s estate. Maisie’s design has transformed the atmosphere of the NTU Mansfield Centre, providing an interest and a vibrancy to the space.”
