A housebuilder has announced new opportunities available to students across Derby ahead of National Apprenticeship Week.
The Redrow Midlands apprenticeship scheme will see successful candidates work at popular developments across the region.
The apprenticeships will enable students with a passion for construction to develop their vocational skills and focus on different aspects of housebuilding, including bricklaying and carpentry. With a current shortage of construction and trade skills in the UK, Redrow has reinforced its commitment to investing in the workforce of the future.
Elaine Cartwright, Head of Sales at Redrow Midlands, said: “As part of our commitment to developing and inspiring the next generation of housebuilders, we’re proud to offer apprenticeship opportunities across Derby for school leavers who aspire to build a career in construction.
“Our aim is to give motivated learners the chance to expand their industry knowledge and gain practical, hands-on experience, equipping them with the tools and support they need to succeed in their chosen field.
“At Redrow Midlands, we have welcomed over 60 apprentices since 2014, who have graduated with the skills and confidence to pursue successful careers, and we hope to inspire many more. Among this year's cohort is 20-year-old Jamie Doyle, who is working towards completing a Level 3 carpentry apprenticeship at the popular Mickleover development, Hackwood Grange.
Sharing what inspired him to apply, Jamie said: “Most of my family works in the construction industry. Helping them with projects while I was growing up inspired me to follow in their footsteps.
“After leaving school, I enrolled on a full-time college course because I wanted to expand my knowledge of construction, especially carpentry. When I discovered the apprenticeship with Redrow Midlands, it ticked all the boxes. I wanted to develop my skills further by learning from experts in their fields and working with one of the UK’s leading housebuilders.
“What I love most is knowing that I’m building a career for life – there will always be work in the construction industry.”
Jamie went on to lay out what a typical day as a carpentry apprentice looks like.
“When I arrive on site, we start with a team briefing to discuss the day’s priorities,” he said. “After that, I work with the subcontractors, carrying out tasks such roofing.
“Throughout the day, I’m always asking questions, picking up new techniques and helping keep the site organised and safe. At the end of the day, I tidy up and plan for the next day before heading home.
“I’m always eager and willing to get stuck in, which is really important as an apprentice. That is how you build experience and confidence so you can work independently by the time you finish your course.”
Redrow Midlands provides support to the apprentices throughout their journey – something Jamie values immensely.
He said: “At the start of your apprenticeship, Redrow gives you everything you need to succeed, including PPE and uniform. You’re also supported every step of the way and there’s always someone to help if you need anything. You are never alone.”
Jamie’s words of advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship with Redrow are simple: “Do it and apply!
“It’s a brilliant way to learn a trade and get your qualifications while being paid. You gain real experience working on site and meet people from all backgrounds that you can learn from. You won’t regret it!
“In five years, I see myself as a fully qualified carpenter and hopefully still part of the Redrow team!”
